ANNUAL REPORT 2009
DEAR SHAREHOLDERS,
Drake & Scull International PJSC (DSI)
has been able to make phenomenal
progress through `Innovation, People
and Passion', the values upon which
our company is built. It's these very
same values that we bring to our
clients, which differentiates us from our
competitors and which fuelled our
remarkable recent growth.
2009 was a year of great transformation
in which we established a strong
foundation for future growth, not only
through a diversification of our business
streams and geographies but with a
streamlining of our internal operations.
We restructured our IT, HR and QHSE
operations and policies, automated key
business processes and developed
shared services and back office support
to
complement
our
expansion
strategies, creating a framework for
integrated communications across all
our subsidiaries.
As the global financial crises began to
shake the foundations of almost every
major industry in 2008, we progressed
with our initial public offering. The
enthusiastic response from investors
gave us the liquidity needed to act on
our long term corporate strategy to
enter new geographies and tackle new
opportunities that will add value to our
integrated portfolio of services.
With our IPO cash, we actively sought
out acquisitions which would most
effectively
advance
our
target
disciplines, while providing entrance
into new target markets. These
acquisitions were executed following
stringent technical, financial and legal
due diligence process.
- Our acquisition of Passavant-Roediger,
a Germany-based global developer of
wastewater, water and sludge treatment
technologies, provided us with
immediate entrance into the international
arena as a market-leading EPC
contractor, able to compete for big
business globally.
- Our acquisition of Drake & Scull
International for Electrical Contracting
(DSIEC) in Kuwait, brought us immediate
entrance
to
Kuwait's
booming
infrastructure sector which is expected to
witness major developments following the
announcement earlier this year of a USD
104 Billion, four-year economic stimulus
plan that includes spending on major
infrastructure development throughout
Kuwait and building of roads, airports,
hospitals and schools estimated to be
worth over USD 20 Billion in contract
revenue in addition to the residential
and commercial projects that will be
needed to meet the demands of the
country's rapid population growth.
Along with our new acquisitions and
diversified portfolio of services, we've
been able to leverage our past
successes and vast experience in
turnkey MEP contracting from the
construction of high-rise buildings, to the
design and build of the world's largest
district cooling plants to win new
business in these regions. Our growth
strategy continued with the establishment
of offices in key growth areas such as
Jordan, Libya and Thailand and success
in winning projects in Saudi Arabia,
Bahrain and Sudan.
Our company is now organized along the
major service lines of MEP, IWP, WWT,
Telecom and Civil Contracting in targeted
segments of major commercial, industrial,
governmental, and institutional service
sectors, launching the company into a new
stratosphere of diversification that allows
us to align with multiple client needs.
In conclusion, the year 2009 brought
immense changes and success to DSI.
We went public, we shifted our position
in domestic markets, and we expanded
horizontally and vertically to create new
business streams. Our goal is to build
upon our success in the UAE to become
among the top three multi-disciplinary
EPC companies in every country in
which we operate.
After winning seven projects valued at
AED 2 Billion in the GCC, Sudan and
Thailand, and closing the year with a
backlog of AED 3.3 Billion, 2009 is
proof that DSI is not only on track, but
poised for unprecedented growth,
promising exceptional returns for all of
our shareholders.
I have nothing but unquestionable faith
in DSI, our people and our capabilities,
and I am sure that our efforts in 2009
will serve as a launching pad for
reaching new heights in 2010.
Sincerely,
Khaldoun Tabari
Vice-Chairman and CEO
